Manganese, and it is the signature problem of Devonian shale wells in this county. USGS sampling in the upper Susquehanna basin found manganese in bedrock wells running roughly sixty times higher than in shallow sand-and-gravel wells, with about one well in four above the level where it starts staining. It shows up as black or brown specks, dark staining in the toilet tank and dishwasher, and a metallic taste. New York has a health-based standard for it as well as an aesthetic one, which is why we test for it rather than treating it as a cosmetic afterthought. Whole home filtration handles it.

Hydrogen sulfide gas, and around Cooperstown it is close to the norm on a drilled well. When USGS sampled bedrock wells across the upper Susquehanna basin, field crews noted the odor in eight of the fourteen. Marcellus shale is organic-rich, with total organic carbon commonly in the 2.5 to 5.5 percent range, and that carbon plus sulfur minerals is exactly what sulfate-reducing bacteria need. In two separate USGS sampling rounds seven years apart, Otsego County bedrock wells came back at a median around 96 to 100 mg/L as calcium carbonate, roughly 6 grains per gallon, which is only moderately hard. The shallow sand-and-gravel wells down in the valleys were consistently harder, around 145 to 149 mg/L. Individual wells ranged from 7 mg/L to 400. The village’s own water is surface water drawn from Otsego Lake, so it is no guide either. Plenty of homes around here do want softening, but plenty don’t, and hardness is a number worth measuring rather than assuming. The only way to know yours is to test for it.

Maybe not, and we would rather tell you that than sell you one. Otsego County bedrock wells typically test only moderately hard, around 6 grains per gallon in the USGS records, and some run far softer than that. If your complaint is black or orange staining, a metallic taste, sediment, or a sulfur smell, a softener is the wrong tool and filtration is the right one. If your complaint is scale on the kettle and spots on the glasses, then softening is what you want. The test decides.

Probably natural ion exchange, which happens in deep shale wells here. As water sits in clay-rich rock, calcium and magnesium swap out for sodium, so hardness drops and sodium climbs. One Otsego well USGS sampled at 313 feet came back with hardness of 7 mg/L, a pH of 9.1 and sodium at 77 mg/L. That water is naturally softened, so a softener would add nothing, but the sodium matters if anyone in the house is on a sodium-restricted diet. Worth knowing which one you have.

No. A properly functioning water softener will never make your water taste salty. The small amount of sodium added is far too little to create a salty taste.

Through ion exchange. As it removes the calcium and magnesium that make water hard, it replaces those ions one for one with sodium. The amount added is proportional to how hard your water is, and in most cases it isn't a significant contributor to the sodium in your diet.

Yes. Once a softener is installed it begins removing the scale that hard water built up. It takes a long time to clear, but it will clear.

Other than salt or potassium chloride, no. A softener actually reduces the cleaning supplies and detergents going down your drain, which makes it a net positive environmentally.

Modern softeners recharge based on how much water you use and how hard it is. Most of our customers add salt once or twice a year.

It's a reasonable thing to check on a drilled well here. A local testing program run with the Otsego County Conservation Association sampled 83 wells in this county and found detectable methane in roughly 46 percent of them, with about 7 percent above the level at which routine monitoring is advised. Methane in water is naturally occurring in Devonian black shale country and is usually a venting and well-construction question rather than a filtration one, but you want to know.

Iron, manganese, sulfur, and hardness are mostly aesthetic and nuisance problems at typical levels, though manganese does have a health-based standard in New York and is worth measuring. Bacteria is the more common real failure here: USGS found total coliform in nearly a third of the wells it sampled across this basin.
