Why Frankfort Homeowners Choose Culligan For Well Water Treatment

Our systems are second to none. The real advantage is that we make treating well water simple.

  1. We Treat Your Water, Not A Category

Frankfort sits on Utica Shale, with the Frankfort Formation named for the gulf just south of the village, and on top of that a thick sheet of glacial sand and gravel that USGS has mapped in detail. A shallow well in that valley fill and a drilled well into the shale below it are two different waters with two different problem lists. We start with a test and build the treatment around your actual numbers, which is why we won’t quote a system over the phone.

  2. The Company That Drilled It Can Treat It

Most homeowners end up with a driller, a plumber, and a separate water treatment company, and when something goes wrong each one points at the others. We drill, pump, test, and treat. One number, one company, one answer.

  3. Expert Installation, And We Maintain It

Culligan has been in water treatment for more than 85 years and it’s all we do. Your local Culligan delivers, installs, and maintains the system for you, so there’s no shipping damage, no unboxing, no guessing about install location, and no third-party service line when it needs attention. Schedule an appointment, then enjoy the water.

  4. Make Your Water Work For You

On the fence about whether you need treatment? These are the returns that pay a system off over time.

    • 24% in energy savings by using softened cool water to wash clothes
    • 30% more life out of water-using appliances when contaminants are filtered out
    • 50% reduction in detergent costs for laundry, hair, and body in soft water
    • No more replacing fixtures and appliances that iron ruined early

Frankfort Well Water

That’s iron. Utica Shale is black, organic-rich, and full of pyrite, and the oxygen-poor conditions inside fractured shale keep iron dissolved and mobile right up until it reaches air at your tap. USGS found iron above the staining standard in half the wells it sampled across the Mohawk basin. A softener alone won’t handle meaningful iron. An iron filter will.

Hydrogen sulfide gas, and Frankfort sits on exactly the rock that produces it. Black shale supplies both the sulfur and the organic carbon that sulfate-reducing bacteria need, and USGS found the odor in seven of fourteen bedrock wells sampled across this basin against one of eight shallow wells. If you have a drilled well here, it is close to a coin flip. Sulfur filtration removes it.

Hard, and the village figures won’t tell you your number. Frankfort’s public supply is three municipal wells on Industrial Drive, treated before distribution, plus a purchased-water connection with Ilion. Your well is untreated and probably finished somewhere different. USGS describes groundwater in this basin as generally hard to very hard, median around 230 mg/L as calcium carbonate, roughly 13 grains per gallon, running as high as 510 mg/L in individual wells. Counterintuitively, the shallow valley-fill wells here often test harder than the shale wells, because the glacial gravel is made of ground-up carbonate rock. Hardness is what scales your heater, and the only way to know your figure is to test for it.

Frequently Asked Well Water Treatment Questions

We Have Answers

A softener removes hardness and will carry a limited amount of iron and manganese with it. On a shale well around Frankfort iron is often the main event rather than a side issue, and that calls for a dedicated iron filter. A test tells us which situation you're in.

Most well homes around Frankfort end up with both, because hardness and iron are separate problems with separate solutions. Whole home filtration paired with softening is the complete answer for a typical well here.

No. A properly functioning water softener will never make your water taste salty. The small amount of sodium added is far too little to create a salty taste.

Through ion exchange. As it removes the calcium and magnesium that make water hard, it replaces those ions one for one with sodium. The amount added is proportional to how hard your water is, and in most cases it isn't a significant contributor to the sodium in your diet.

Yes. Once a softener is installed it begins removing the scale that hard water built up. It takes a long time to clear, but it will clear.

Other than salt or potassium chloride, no. A softener actually reduces the cleaning supplies and detergents going down your drain, which makes it a net positive environmentally.

Modern softeners recharge based on how much water you use and how hard it is. Most of our customers add salt once or twice a year.

Yes. USGS mapped the sand-and-gravel aquifer under Frankfort, Ilion, Mohawk and Herkimer in detail and flagged it as highly susceptible to surface contamination, because it is permeable and the water table is shallow. This is also a valley with a long industrial history. That combination makes a one-time screen for volatile organic compounds worth doing on a shallow valley well, on top of the usual bacteria and nitrate test. It is not a reason to assume there's a problem, just a reason to look.

Iron, manganese, sulfur, and hardness are mostly aesthetic and nuisance problems at the levels we usually find. Bacteria, nitrate, arsenic, and radon in water are separate tests. Start with a water test and we'll tell you honestly which category your results fall into.

Most residential systems install in a few hours in a single visit. We deliver the equipment, install it, and set it up, so there's nothing for you to unbox or assemble.

As soon as the well is drilled and tested. Roughing in space and plumbing for treatment during construction costs far less than retrofitting it into a finished home.

Every recommendation we make starts with knowing what is in your water. The test is free, it happens at your house, and it takes about half an hour. You'll get your numbers explained in plain language and an honest answer about whether you need treatment at all.
